Experimenting with Scientific Illustration

I’ve recently gotten interested in the field of scientific illustration, so I thought I would take a stab at some simple stuff. I was also feeling the urge to start using my old Copic markers again, which I haven’t toughed in years. I used Google Images for some simple reference, but did no direct transfer. I drew these from sight onto bristol board, did some line art with a sepia-colored Pigma Micron pen, colored them with Copic Sketch markers, and scanned and cleaned them up in photoshop. I also had to color correct quite a bit, since my scanner seems to noticeably wash out colors.

First, a yellow onion. I was very happy with the results.

Next, of course, a red onion.

And now, a shallot. Are you noticing a pattern here?

And garlic…

And a green onion.

And then… BOOM!  Some tomatos. Didn’t see that one coming, did you?

I was over-all pretty pleased with my experimentation.
